Worms are Go!

We received our worms from VermiTechnology Unlimited yesterday, safely packed with a good bit of bedding and even instructions!

I had actually started putting scraps into the box over the past week, so at this point it was decomposing quite and bit and started to smell (the box was sealed), normally it would not be as messy or as smelly if you’re starting with fresher scraps. Our bins are a little festive, since I got the first bin months ago for $3 or so after christmas (didn’t even have a worm bin in mind at the time). I drilled holes using a 1/8″ bit along all the sides and the bottom. These holes may be a bit large and may allow the worms to escape, I’m not sure, but since the inner bin is almost completely enclosed by the larger one, I’m not too concerned.

I mixed compost manure with water in a bowl for dipping the bedding. Next, I thoroughly wrung out each bunch of paper bedding and fluffed it up a bit before adding it to the bottom of the bin. Then I dumped the food matter back on top of the bedding and introduced the worms. I actually ran out of bedding paper but they came in quite a bit of bedding so it should serve well for the time being.

My little minions (I probably should have gotten a thousand, not two thousand). There is quite a bit of food but I think it might get too hot or something, it just seems overloaded, hopefully we don’t see a population crash.

And if you didn’t get enough action in pictures, check it out in full motion.
